Angela Robinson Relinquishes Girltrash: All Night Long

When the announcement of the long-awaited screening and DVD release dates came through recently, anticipation and relief was felt for all those who have stood waiting on the sidelines, since the principal photography of the movie version of the rather successful web series Girltrash! was completed in 2010.

The released dates of the October 25th screening in Palm Springs of Girltrash: All Night Long and subsequent DVD release in December 15th, should have been the crown jewel of all lesbian films but in a stunning statement, writer and producer Angela Robinson has relinquished any and all ties to the film over creative differences and professional, moral and ethical issues.

Produced by the non-profit film production company, Power Up. The company founded in 2000 by Stacy Codikow, have been behind Robinson’s original short film D.E.B.S as well as Jamie Babbit’s feature Itty Bitty Titty Committee.

The 2007 web series Girltrash! stared Lisa Rieffel and Michelle Lombardo as well as lesbian crushes Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Gabrielle Christian and Mandy Musgrave (South of Nowhere) and The L Word‘s Rose Rollins.

For the film version, Rieffel and Lombardo reprised their roles, along with Christain, Musgrave and Rollins. Out actress Megan Cavanagh and other L Word alumnae joining the cast were, Clementine Ford, Kate French and Malaya Rivera Drew. The monster musical penned by Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S., Hung, The L Word, True Blood) and directed by Alexandra Kondracke (Girltrash!, Hung, The L Word) seemed to be a shoo-in to be on every lesbian’s must-see list, to have top festivals lining up to showcase the film, successful DVD sales and an assured solid future placement on every dyke’s personal library.

However, on Oct. 24 Robinson released this statement:

I was trying to find a way to make affordable, quality lesbian entertainment and develop a brand that would encompass web series, movies, television, graphic novels and stage musicals. To this end, after first making a web series and a penning a graphic novel, I produced “Girltrash: All Night Long” with Stacy Codikow.

I love the movie and each and every person that tirelessly worked on this project – the crew and mentees that donated their time and energy for free or for cut rates, the incredible musicians, Lisa Rieffel and Johnny Dunn, who wrote fantastic songs, the awesome actors who worked all night long for months on end, Luke Tierney, the composer and Chris Hill, the editor, and of course, Alex Kondracke, the amazing director. I am extremely proud of the work that was done.

But POWER UP is presenting a version of the film that I have not seen, that is unfinished and that has not been creatively approved by me and as a result, I do not support nor validate any screenings or commercial sales of “Girltrash: All Night Long” at this time.

Working with Stacy Codikow and POWER UP has been, without a doubt, the worst experience of my career. Because Stacy has been so horrible I will never again be involved in any project in which Stacy Codikow or POWER UP is involved.
